Given the number of courses and trips we operate and the rugged and challenging nature of the New Zealand mountains, Alpine Guides (Aoraki) Ltd (AGL) has an excellent safety record by international standards. However, in the field of ski touring, guided ascents and instruction, AGL has experienced 3 fatal climbing accidents since 1970.
During this time, there has also been a small number of accidents involving injury. Regardless of guide qualifications or experience, we cannot eliminate all risks from mountaineering. It is important that you understand the nature of the risks you may face during this trip. These risks include, without being exhaustive, things such as rock or ice fall, cliffs, cornices, avalanches, changing snow conditions or mechanical failure, falling, crevasse hazards, weather and other environmental hazards, and also hazards caused by participants.
You have the right at any time during the trip to ask your guide about specific risks in any situation. Your guide will do their best to disclose significant hazards during the trip, in a manner that is consistent with the safe operation of the activity. It is not possible to continually disclose all risks of any nature.
You have the right at any time during your trip to ask your guide to discontinue the activity you are engaged in if you are not comfortable. Your guide will do their best to accommodate that as long as it does not increase the risk to other party members.
